Since the internet, and especially since becoming a writer and a performer, I’ve realized how many truly great unknown musicians, poets etc. there are. This can be discouraging, but also something of a relief. It's OK never to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone.
I’m not a music critic. I don't have anything to say, just: I’ve heard them and I like them. Categories hang loosely around their shoulders here. “Jazz” may mean “Well, she composes in a classical format but she plays mostly in clubs” NOTE I realize there are many greats I've left off the list; some deliberately like personal friends or artists already well known. Feel free to make your own recommendations.
