Five Fine French Film Series

 .

Philharmonia  The hyper-charismatic Marie-Sophie Ferdane tears through barriers of tradition and gender in the world of classical music by conducting Beethoven's 6th Symphony entirely from memory without a score. Great music and stunning shots at the Cité de la Musique which definitely goes on my list for the next trip to Paris.

.

Witnesses A seaside village with high cliffs, a male detective from out of town takes over and the local police officer is a woman. This isn't Broadchurch though; the local French police officer is stylish and wears high heels except when chasing a killer across the sands. Also a truly macabre murder theme.

.

Guilty as Charged  A procedural with elements of Barney MillerMarie Bunel as the Captain conducts affairs, fights crime, curses like a sailor and slams things around with all the elegance and panache normal to French women

.

Vernon Subutex Aging punk rockers in  Paris. I can relate.

.

Call My Agent!  No I can't relate to a bunch of promoters who scheme, cajole and bully.  Except that they do it with such passion and vulnerability that I am reminded of the magic that is cinema. Recently reviewed in the New Yorker.
